IPNEWS-Monrovia: Following recent statement by the Head of Delegation and Ambassador of the European Union (EU), Laurent Delahousse, that the Liberian capital is the โ€˜dirtiestโ€™ place he has ever seen in all of the counties in Africa he has visited, the former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has called for collective efforts from Liberians to keep Monrovia clean.

Speaking at the Monrovia City Hall on Wednesday, October 13 following her return from neighboring Sierra Leone, the former President said she had gone to give her moral support to the Monrovia City Corporation and Mayor Jefferson Koijee in their task to keep Monrovia clean. She also said she shared the lesson she learned from the City Mayor of Freetown with Mayor Koijee. โ€œWhile in Sierra Leone I met the City Mayor of Freetown and what I learned from her on how she keeps her city is what I came to share with Monrovia City Mayor.โ€

Ms. Sirleaf said she acknowledges the enormous challenges the MCC faces with solid waste management and wants every Liberian to join efforts to ensuring that the Liberian capital is clean at all times. โ€œI urge Liberians to clean their respective communities and vicinities and ensure that the waste are managed properly,โ€ she noted.

On his part Mayor Koijee lauded former President Sirleaf for her moral support and guidance to the leadership of the Monrovia City Corporation. Koijee says the former Presidentโ€™s visit to the MCC will engender all well-meaning Liberians and senior citizens to rally their moral support to the MCC in its task to keep Monrovia clean at all times.

A fortnight ago (Tuesday, October 5, 2021) while addressing the Monrovia City Forum for Waste Management organized by the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) and partners in Monrovia, the Head of Delegation and Ambassador of the European Union (EU) Laurent Delahousse described Monrovia as the โ€˜dirtiest cityโ€™ he has seen in Africa in all of the countries he has visited on the continent.

Ambassador Delahousse said since his arrival in Liberia over a year ago, he noticed that the city of Monrovia is so dirty as compared to other Africa countries capital cities he has visited.

The Monrovia City Forum for Waste Management was held for stakeholders to brainstorm and find solutions to the many challenges confronting the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC).

Taking into consideration the partnership that exist between Liberia and the EU, it has come as no surprise when one of Liberiaโ€™s key development partners, the EU through its Head of Delegation and Ambassador to Liberia, Laurent Delahousse has cautioned the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) to take charge of waste management in Monrovia Capitol City.

The EU envoy said the funds given the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) by the EU is not being utilized for waste management as indicative of the dirtiness of the Liberian Capital, adding โ€œMonrovia is a disgusting city, Monrovia is a dirty city. โ€œThose monies are collected from Europeans as taxes, so when they are given to our partners the monies should be properly used and accounted for,โ€ he pointed out.

โ€œIf you want to attract tourists in the city, businesses in the city, a clean city is your guide,โ€ Ambassador Delahousse stressed

He also cautioned that monies collected from bigger businesses in the city, including hotels, stores, residents among others should be properly used in order to give the City of Monrovia a proper look.
