Who`s Telling Truth? -Weah or Ellen

By Mark B. Newa

IPNews-Monrovia, Liberia-28 February 2018: Since the functions of the special presidential transitional team elapsed, the current state of the Liberian economy has now become a center of controversy, with claims that the country`s coffers were depleted by the Unity Party-led regime, a claim that former President Ellen Johnson has denied.

In his inaugural address to the nation on January 22, 2017 in Monrovia, President George Manneh Weah said the CDC-led government inherited a broken economy, and a weak currency that is in free fall, and worse of all empty coffers.

Recently on international wire, the BBC, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf expressed disbelief contrary to the claim by President Weah, that the country`s coffers were empty.

According to her, US$150 million was left in the country`s coffers.

In December 2017, the closing year of the Unity Party-led government, the Central Bank of Liberia reported more than US$449 million were transferred into private account outside of Liberia, a revelation that is yet to be authenticated.

Earlier during her last tenure, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf had informed the people of Liberia that her government was incapacitated to effect price control, a statement which was buttressed by her then ministers of Finance and Development Planning, Commerce and Industry, and even lately by the Executive Governor of the Central Bank of Liberia.

However, with the unfolding, the House of Representatives and the Senate have summoned the Central Bank of Liberia, Liberia Revenue Authority and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to appear for questioning and to provide details as to who is telling the truth.
