Michael A. McCarthy, the new United States Ambassador accredited near Monrovia on Friday January 22, 2021 officially Presented his letter of credence to President George Weah.

The brief ceremony held at the President’s Foreign Ministry Office on Capitol Hill came just two days after the 46th President of The United States of America Joe Biden took office from former US President Donald Trump.

Speaking during the ceremony he said the American Government truly respect the example set by President Weah personally by demonstrating discipline, calling for nonviolence and partisan civility, and supporting the National Election Commission’s vital independence.

Presenting his letter of credence to President Weah he stated that the Liberian head of State leadership during Liberia’s first National elections since the departure of UNMIL was reassuring to the international community, but more importantly, it was inspiring to the Liberian people, resonating with their clear expectation of peaceful, free, and fair process.

“We applaud your government’s efforts to address the causes of entrenched poverty in Liberia through the Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development and we believe our assistance effort aligns effectively to support its commendable goals”, The US diplomat re-emphasized.

Mr. Michael A. McCarthy of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor has been nominated by US President Donald Trump as Ambassador to the Liberia since June 2020.

He served as Consul General of the United States Consulate General in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Previously, Mr. McCarthy was the Office Director for the Office of Retirement in the Bureau of Human Resources at the State Department.

Ambassador McCarthy also served as the Deputy Chief of Mission for Embassy Juba in South Sudan.

The new American Ambassador succeeds Ambassador Christine Elder who completed her Liberia Assignment and departed Liberia on Saturday, March 21, after nearly four years at the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia (ciutesy of Fortinetvliberia)
