“Liberia is the only country we have. We must not destroy [our] country for the sake of promoting our political interests”, Pres. Enciurage Liberians

President George Manneh Weah, speaking to the nation through state radio ELBC on the eve of Tuesday’s elections, made it clear that violence has no place in Liberia which had suffered long years of human, infrastructural and economic devastation in the past.

“Liberia is the only country we have. We must not destroy [our] country for the sake of promoting our political interests. Let us use the ballot and not violence, to choose our leaders. We’ll remain one nation, one people, one glorious land of liberty by God’s command,” the President has said.

Though he’s noted for always championing peace; the Liberian leader’s speech in the run-up to the “crucial” Special Senatorial elections on 8 December, blended with two Representatives by-elections as well as a constitutional referendum, stemmed from election-related violence that occurred in Dambala, Grand Cape Mount County at the weekend, between supporters of senatorial candidate Simeon Taylor of CPP and incumbent Victor Watson. The two accuse each other of provocation.

Two vehicles and a house were reportedly burned to ashes and several people injured. The President has expressed complete disappointment for the situation and announced that the police have arrested some individuals linked to the ugly act. He promised that all those linked will be prosecuted under ‘our laws.’

“We should all be free and safe to participate in these elections. It is my constitutional duty as leaders of the country to ensure that all persons exercise their democratic right to vote freely, fairly and peacefully—it is a responsibility that I take very seriously.

“I have therefore instructed the national security to take all necessary measures so that each and every voter is protected during voting. I ask all political leaders to also use their platforms and influence to admonish supporters to refrain from provocation which leads to violence at the polls,” President Weah asserted.
