IPNews-Monrovia: Reports reaching IPNews, from Nimba coubty says a high-speed train belonging to steel giant Arcelor Mittal derailed early yesterday June 13, 2020, derailded with no death or injury reported from the accident.

The train had departed from the mine in Yekepa, Nimba County shortly after 4 am and was heading to the port of Buchanan, with heavily loaded minerals when it derailed on one of the main rail lines that connects Liberia north to the south.

According to news gathered from District #2, Nimba County, the train was heading from Yekapa around 4 a.m. on Saturday, June 13 when residents heard the harsh sound of iron clashing against iron from about 10 kilometers from the accident scene

The information said a sharp ‘iron sound’ trailed the train’s movement, and caused panic among residents of nearby towns of Zuluyee and Tondin.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated, local authorities said. however, eye witnesses believed that the cause of the accident could be due to mechanical fault.

Images from the scene showed that part of the rail damaged with at 30 buckets of iron ore wasted to the ground.

The operation of iron ore will resume shortly, once the derailed wagons are removed from the rail line.

Ms. Amanda Hill, told reporters that the company will come out with a statement shortly and she could therefore not comment further.

It can be recalled on August 2, 2016, a train belonging to Arcelor Mittal derailed in LAMCO camp, Bing County, about three kilometers from the boundary with Nimba County.

There was no report of casualty, besides the large amount of wasted ore at the scene of the incident.
