IPNEWS-Minneapolis, MN:  The City of Minneapolis skyline, a symbol of our shared community, was the breathtaking backdrop for the prestigious 10th Annual Voices Magazine Awards gala, a milestone event held at the esteemed Mosaic Event Center. This gala, a testament to a decade of honoring the influential contributions of the African diaspora, fostering community growth, and promoting excellence, is a proud moment for all of us.
Under the theme “We Rise Above Challenges,” the event spotlighted the resilience, achievements, and spirit of African immigrant communities in Minnesota and beyond, particularly in the face of challenges such as cultural assimilation, discrimination, and economic disparities.
Community Leaders and elected officials representing diverse sectors came together to acknowledge the transformative impacts of the African diaspora. Their contributions to business, such as the establishment of successful startups and innovative business models, education through mentorship programs and academic achievements, health by leading health awareness campaigns, culture by promoting African art and music, and civic engagement through active participation in local governance, have been significant and inspiring.
At the heart of the evening, Mr. Charles Dwamina, CEO of Voices Magazine, emphasized the event’s mission of uplifting community excellence and fostering appreciation for individuals from marginalized communities.
“Recognizing these outstanding individuals is about more than just celebration,” Mr. Dwamina stated. “It is a call to inspire future generations and build a culture of unity and progress for the collective good.”
The event honored trailblazers and role models such as Dr. Milpha Blamo in education leadership, Dr. Gene Gelgelu in non-profit leadership, Emma Kasiga in business leadership, AJ Akoto in arts & culture leadership, and Lydia Kayongo in community advocacy. Their contributions have enhanced their local communities and the Midwest’s broader cultural and economic landscape.
Mr. Dwamina, a Liberian native, called for continued collaboration and dedication, highlighting how individual success can inspire and motivate many in Liberia, across the African continent, and the world.
By celebrating diversity and excellence, the Voices Magazine Awards gala was more than just a ceremony. It was a platform for reshaping narratives, breaking down stereotypes, and building bridges between people and the communities in which they live.
Mr. Wayne Doe, Chairman of the organizing committee and vice president of Voices Magazine, expressed profound gratitude to the planning team, attendees, honorees, and supporters, whose dedication made the evening a resounding success. “This event is a collective victory,” he said, noting that the turnout and support further highlighted the positive impact of the African diaspora in a thriving community and state, emphasizing their critical role in advancing culture, policy, and development.  The evening was a poignant reminder of the power of perseverance, resilience, and collaboration in overcoming challenges and driving meaningful change.
In a responding statement, the honorees and award winners extended their appreciation to Voices Magazine, reaffirming that its work is a testament to the power of overcoming challenges and making collective contributions. They also issued a call to action: “When we invest in the well-being of humanity and our communities, those efforts are never in vain. We encourage everyone to become active participants in improving the socio-economic landscape of our communities.”
As the 10th Annual Voices Magazine Awards gala concluded, it reminded everyone that we can build stronger, more vibrant communities for all when we unite to uplift one another.
Voices Magazine remains steadfast in its commitment to amplifying the voices and contributions of the African diaspora, with this event marking a pivotal moment in its ongoing journey of advocacy, motivation, and empowerment.
