In Dominican Republic: Tourism Envoy Onanuga Highlights Critical Importance of Sector

IPNEWS: At a gathering of experts and interest groups in the Dominican Republic, Liberia’s Tourism Ambassador, Christopher Hayes Onanuga joined other speakers to highlight the significant role the sector plays towards economic development.

In accordance with the significance of the occasion, Mr. Onanuga and others projected the critical role of African tourism and its potential for economic growth.

They gave recognition to Africa as the cultural heartbeat of the world, on grounds that no entertainment can be fully appreciated without acknowledging its roots in African heritage.

With global tourism generating $1.8 trillion annually, Africa’s current share of less than 7% is seen as a significant underutilization of its potential. Key stakeholders believe that Africa must leverage its rich cultural offerings to enhance its tourism revenue, focusing on improved visa accessibility, transportation infrastructure, and strategic investment.

Here in Liberia, Amb. Onanuga indicated that strides are being made to bolster tourism. Key among those achievements, he pointed out that legislative framework for an independent tourism authority is nearing completion, backed by strong political will from the Executive Branch of the Liberian government.

This move, he maintains, is expected to pave the way for expansive growth in Liberia’s tourism sector.

The United Nations Tourism Commission for Africa and the World Tourism Organization are playing pivotal roles in this initiative, emphasizing the need for global engagement and partnership. The First Lady of Zimbabwe has emerged as a key supporter of African tourism, advocating for the promotion of the continent’s diverse foods, clothing, culture, and traditions.

Participants highlighted the importance of building capacity through vocational learning and the establishment of tourism academies to foster innovation and growth in the sector. The integration of digital technology and cultural heritage is also deemed essential for future developments.

To address the existing gap between Africa and the Americas, the proposal for a Single African Air Market was put forward. This initiative aims to facilitate easier movement of people and goods, fostering tourism and cultural exchange. Key components of the proposal include Inter-linkage of transportation networks Collaborative proposals for investment and training.

Moreover, discussions have pointed towards the necessity of incorporating tourism courses in schools and providing visa-free access to promote international tourism engagement.

As the dialogue progresses, there is growing recognition of tourism’s potential as a tool for peace building and conflict resolution. Engaging communities through cultural exchanges and tourism can foster understanding and cooperation, helping to mitigate tensions.

The session in the Dominican Republic marks a pivotal moment for African tourism stakeholders.

With a unified commitment to collaboration and innovation, the future of tourism in Africa looks promising, aiming for a joint declaration that will enhance the continent’s standing as a premier global destination.
