Liberia Formally Launches UNSC Non-permanent Seat Bid

IPNEWS: Liberia’s President Joseph N. Boakai has officially launched Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.

Speaking at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on September 27, 2024, President Boakai called on member nations to support Liberia’s bid.

In his address, President Boakai underscored Liberia’s historical legacy as a founding member of both the United Nations and its precursor, the League of Nations.

He highlighted Liberia’s long-standing commitment to the principles of peace, security, and human dignity, values embedded in the country’s Constitution and reflected in its active role on the global stage.

The Liberian leader pointed out Liberia’s significant contributions to promoting peace and development across Africa, including its participation in establishing key continental and regional organizations such as the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, and the Mano River Union.

He emphasized that Liberia has consistently played a vital role in fostering cooperation and peace across the continent.

For her part, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf also spoke at the event, expressing confidence in Liberia’s qualifications to represent Africa on the UN Security Council.
