IPNEWS: Hon. Thomas Goshua, the Representative for Electoral District #5, has voiced strong concerns regarding the government’s commitment to combatting drug abuse in the country. In a recent statement, Goshua asserted that the administration is failing to take the issue seriously, undermining efforts to address what he deems a national crisis.

Goshua highlighted that an initial allocation of US$1.9 million was proposed in the national budget to tackle drug-related issues. However, he revealed that the Ministry of Finance subsequently removed these funds, citing a lack of personnel to manage drug enforcement operations.

โ€œWhat about those currently working to confiscate these huge drug shipments across the country? They are making efforts, but both the legislature and the executive are not treating this as a serious fight,โ€ Goshua stated, emphasizing the need for more robust support for those on the front lines of drug enforcement.

The lawmaker also criticized the governmentโ€™s handling of drug abuse, noting that while President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has labeled the issue a “National Health Emergency,” little has been done to address it effectively. โ€œThis lack of action is detrimental to all of us,โ€ he said, calling for urgent and decisive measures to combat drug and substance abuse in Liberia.

Goshuaโ€™s remarks reflect a growing frustration among lawmakers and community leaders regarding the government’s priorities in addressing drug-related issues.
