U.S. Ambassador Mark Toner Hails Gov’t On War & Economic Crimes Establishment

IPNEWS: United States Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Mark Toner commits the US government’s full support to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia; says players of Liberian Civil War must account for their actions

Speaking at the 21st Anniversary of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement held over the weekend at the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Ministerial Complex over the weekend, Ambassador Toner said amid the maintenance of the peace, key players in the brutal civil war must be held accountable for their actions.

The US envoy emphasized that there will always be disenchantment among war victims if those who committed hideous crimes against the state and its people are not brought to justice.

According to him, Liberia cannot rest on its laurels, further indicating that political stability requires vigilance and responsible actions and rhetoric on the part of political leaders, political parties, civil society and the media.

Coincidentally, the US Ambassador stated the United States’ position in establishing the courts in Liberia in the presence of two noticeable former rebel leaders: George Boley, leader of the Liberian Peace Council (LPC), and now Grand Gedeh County Senator, Thomas Yaya Nimely, leader of the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL).

Nimely has relentlessly opposed the Unity Party’s decision to establish the special court, and is on tape urging President Joseph Boakai to focus on improving the lives of the ordinary citizens instead of giving priority to establishing the War and Economic Crimes Court.

However, the United States envoy remained firm on his position for the Liberian government to legally take the stance against impunity.
