IPNEWS: In a strategic move to bolster regional partnerships and prepare for major upcoming projects, the management team of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) is currently on a working visit to Ghana. The visit includes tours of key facilities operated by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

As LEC constructs Liberia’s first solar plant, which will produce 20MW, as well as the development of the new St. Paul 2 (SP2) hydropower plant and the expansion of the Mt. Coffee Hydropower Plant by over 50% of its current capacity, the management team sought to gather valuable lessons and insights from Ghana’s leading energy institutions.

The VRA, which owns and operates a total installed electricity generation capacity of 2,547MW, has successfully diversified its power generation portfolio to include sustainable sources such as hydro, natural gas, and renewables. During their visit, the LEC delegation toured VRAโ€™s facilities, gaining firsthand knowledge of the Authorityโ€™s operations and exploring potential areas for collaboration.

In addition to their engagement with the VRA, the LEC team also visited the Electricity Company of Ghana, a public utility responsible for the transmission, supply, and distribution of electricity throughout Ghana. The discussions focused on developing frameworks to enhance local human resource capital, with the goal of strengthening LECโ€™s capacity to manage and operate its expanding infrastructure, as well as exploring other energy partnerships.

This visit marks a significant step in LECโ€™s efforts to harness regional expertise and position Liberiaโ€™s energy sector for future growth and sustainability. By learning from the successes of neighboring countries, LEC aims to deliver on its commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity to the people of Liberia.
