IPNEWS: The National Patriotic Party (NPP), once a major political ally within the Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC), has continued to distance itself from the CDC, demanding the prosecution of corrupt officials from Weah’s administration.
The NPP views the prosecution of these former public officials as a critical step towards deterring future corruption and the misuse of power.
As President Boakai intensifies his crackdown on corruption following damning reports from the General Auditing Commission (GAC) and the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), the NPP has endorsed calls for the prosecution of former officials from the Weah-led government.
The call was made by the NPP’s National Chairman, Atty. George Mulbah, during a press conference in Monrovia.
The NPP, CDC, and the Liberia People’s Democratic Party (LPDP) had formed a coalition that won the 2017 elections, with George Weah as the standard-bearer and Jewel Howard-Taylor of the NPP as the vice standard-bearer.
However, the NPP has grown increasingly frustrated with allegations of corruption and power abuse within the CDC, which it believes are hindering the country’s growth and development.
NPP Chairman Mulbah emphasized that the ongoing anti-corruption efforts by the Boakai administration would strengthen public sector accountability, provided that the process is non-selective and impartial.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that justice is served without bias to maintain public trust and promote a culture of accountability.
In February 2024, the NPP officially withdrew from the Coalition for Democratic Change, marking a significant shift in the political landscape.
