LIBERIA: Gov’t Defies CDC Resistance Threats

–As Weah Predicts Harsh Economic Crisis

IPNEWS: The government of Liberia has swiftly reacted to Wednesday’s threats by the political leaders of the CDC and former President of Liberia, George Manneh Weah, to resist plans by the government to prosecute former officials of the Weah’s government on corruption charges.

Information Minister Jerolinmek  Piah, told Journalist that the government is on the watch of the CDC and will equally respond to any threat of CDC.

Piah stated that the threat by former President Weah demonstrates the utter mirror of the Weah-Taylor administration and call on the former President to focus on ensuring a speedy and fair trail of the accused rather than threats to revert to violence.

“We want to inform the former pres. that the government is neither deterred, nor concerned at all about your empty threats. We will do what is required consistent with law. If your people go to court, when prosecutors are unable to establish the case due to their connection, then that’s the law.”  Min. Piah stated when he addressed the MICAT press briefing on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
He added: “If they are convicted by the court of competent jurisdiction, they will account for their deeds”.
The official mouthpiece of the Government of Liberia indicated that the actions of the government are based on audit reports which emanated from credible anti-graft institutions, such as the General Auditing Commission (GAC) and Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC).
He emphasized that the Government of Liberia remains focused and is unbending on her action to hold people accountable for their stewardship.
Minister Piah lamented that for an ex-Pres. to defend his former officials who have been charged, shows that he presided over a grand scam that saw an industrialized looting of Liberia.
He disclosed that when the ex-Pres. ascended to power, there were over 60 audit reports left behind by the Unity party led government in 2017, stating that despite the  perception that the UP Government was corrupt, the former president refused to act upon the audit reports he inherited.
“As for Pres. Boakai, he campaigned on accountability and transparency in government and that the President has said he will not hesitate to hold people accountable and that is what he is doing” Minister Piah noted.
Commenting on witch hunting as  ex-Pres Weah stated during his press conference on July 31, 2024, the Minister reminded the former Liberian leader about a few individuals who were chased because of their political stance in the Liberian society.
According to him, Patrick Honnah , Mulbah K. Yorbgor, Amos Tweh, etc. were all victims of the former administration’s witch hunt, removing them from their positions, chasing and closing the radio station of Mr. Honnah  because he is a supporter of the UP.
He assured that as for the UP Government, it will not embark on any witch hunt because the president wants to build an inclusive Liberia.
Meanwhile, the MICAT boss encouraged the indicted former officials to face the court aimed at affording them the opportunity to vindicate themselves, if they believe they have done nothing wrong.
Minister Piah expressed the commitment of the Boakai led Government to ending the culture of impunity in Liberia, stating that “Gone are those days when corruption cases were swept under the carpet”.
This week, former president Weah at a press conference Wednesday, July 31,2024, vowed to strongly resist what he describes as a “witch-hunt” by the Boakai’s administration against former officials from his previous government.Speaking at the headquarters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Weah flank by former government officials and CDC Legislative caucus, urged party members and other opposition groups to stand against the Boakai administration’s actions targeting former government officials which has the propensity of undercutting Liberia’s political credentials earned with the tears and blood of innocent Liberians.

Weah, also a celebrated soccer legend, reflected on his administration’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in Liberia over the past six years, emphasizing that his government refrained from persecuting officials of the previous administration in a bid to reconcile the people yet the Boakai administration is using anti-corruption fight to target key officials of his administration.

Recently, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the Ministry of Justice indicted several former officials from Weah’s administration, including former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, former National Security Advisor Jefferson Karmoh, former Solicitor General Cllr. Nyenati Tuan, former Comptroller of the Financial Intelligence Agency D. Moses P. Cooper, and former Director General of the Financial Intelligence Agency Stanley Ford.

In a surprised move, the government of Liberia apprehended for Solicitor General Cllr. Tuan, Karmoh, Jefferson Karmoh, former National Security Advisor, and D. Moses P. Cooper, former Comptroller of the Financial Intelligence Agency, were detained after failing to meet the financial requirements for a criminal appearance bond, with Judge Ben Barcon rejecting their plea for a personal recognizance bond despite their prominent status.

Samuel Tweah, former Finance and Development Minister during the Weah’s administration, another key figure in the indictment, is reportedly in neighboring South Africa, swiftly responded to the arrest order by the court and described the charges against him and the arrest of his colleagues as a “total witch-hunt” in a statement on social media.

The whereabouts of Stanley Ford remain unknown. However, sources tell the authoritative Independent Probe that Ford fled to the Gambia, days before the indictment was unsealed.

Weah called on the Boakai’s administration to ensure justice is served impartially. He also pointed to what he described as corrupt practices within the current government, including the alleged mismanagement of a US$22 million road maintenance fund and the controversial acquisition of 285 earth-moving equipment, urging that these issues be addressed comprehensively.

The former Liberian President George Manneh Weah also stated that the latest move by the government of Liberia to prosecute former members of his government is intended to divert public attention from the lingering economic crisis the nation faces.

Addressing the media at the headquarters of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), former President Weah stated the CDC has uncovered the Unity Party governments used of public funds from the Central Bank to bailout a private bank which the Unity Party used to finance its election campaign, especially the total disregard of the country’s procurement laws thereby committing the country to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Even though the former president did not elaborate further, reports emerged that the Central Bank of Liberia, did used collateral of the former Global Bank Liberia Limited to sellout labilities for ushering in Bloom Bank.

Touching on the government recent decision to disburse 22 million for rehabilitation of roads across Liberia, particularly southeastern Liberia which remains inaccessible during rainy season, the political leader of the CDC told cheering partisans that the government move was a daylight robbery of $22 million under the guise of road rehabilitation, among other glaring acts of corruption.

“Suddenly, officials who once gained notoriety for public theft now want us to believe they have transformed into referees of good-governance.”

“The CDC will be briefing its partisans in the coming days during a series of mass meetings about the dangerous games of witch-hunt by the UP. I call on other members of the opposition to join us in this fight to preserve our political system.” Formr President Weah said.

The CDC political leader further stated that as part of this discontent over the weaponization of the judiciary against his former officials, he will continue to engage with ECOWAS leaders, whose countries have given blood and tears to the attainment and sustenance of peace and security in Liberia, while notifying other international partners of this plan by the UP to capture the political system in its favor.

Former President Weah: “I want to assure all that the CDC remains a party of law and order and will bring its full and immense political resources to bear to stop the Unity Party in its tracks.”

“As Nelson Mandela said and I quote: “I is not our diversity which divides us; it is not our ethnicity, or religion or culture that divides us. Since we have achieved our freedom, there can only be one division amongst us: between those who cherish democracy and those who do not. Fellow Liberians, our country has enjoyed peace and stability for over 20 years, and the people deserve perpetual peace and stability. Therefore, the Liberian people must resist any attempt by the Boakai administration to disturb peace.”

On the arrest of his former National Security Advisor, and Solicitor-General, former President George Weah stated that the Unity Party Administration ordered heavily armed security personnel to carry out a series of unlawful detentions of some former officials of government, in what is clearly a political move intended to target the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the wider opposition community.

He stated that those detained four former members of the National Security Council, was void of any indictment by a grand jury, stressing that the action by the government is the latest transgression of the Boakai Administration in their callous attempt to undermine the rule of law and security of the state.

The CDC political leader named some of the open and deliberate acts being carried out by the UP administration as the harassment and removal of civil servants from the system based purely along party lines, the excessive use of force against citizens results in several deaths, the non prosecution of Election-related deaths that occurred on camera, and the total disregard for the tenure laws of the country even in the face of the Liberia Supreme Court’s rulings.

Other transgression by the Unity Party government, as the broad day violations of the procurement laws of the country and the disgraced and denial of benefits of duly commissioned foreign service officials.

“ Even as late as yesterday, the President again showed to the nation that he is not a man who respect the rule of law when he sought to illegally remove the Governor of the Central bank of Liberia in clear violation of the act creating said institution.”

“The Unity Party can be assured that the CDC will use all legal and political means at its disposal to resist this move to weaponize the country’s judicial system to its selfish advantage. Yes Mr. Boakai, your actions to politicize justice will be resisted and resisted strongly. The Unity Party government, in the execution of their evil plans, choose to ignore legal and constitutional reliance, available evidence, and pursue reckless measures. The Unity Party must be reminded that these antics have only brought about disorder and confusion in Liberia’s recent history.”

“The national security laws of the country plainly stipulate the measures that must be taken to safeguard public order. In a post-conflict nation such as ours, it becomes an even more challenging task. Intelligence gathering and operations the world over have always been of prime concern and pre-eminence, requiring authorities to exert extra efforts and resources to preserve peace and security.” Former President Weah mentioned.

Touching on the gains of the CDC while in power, former president George Weah said, the CDC-led administration remains proud of its record, pointing that his government preserved the peace, security, and welfare of the country even during the raging Covid-19 pandemic, and at times when the security of the state was at stake.

“I am also deeply proud of my record as President, particularly my unwavering respect for the rule of law and my relentless fight against corruption. You may recall that during my presidency, we advanced the fight against corruption on many fronts, including granting the Liberian Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) direct prosecutorial powers, which is critical to the fight against corruption. To sustain and further advance this fight, we should not allow anyone to erode gains we have made.”

“To utilize its new powers to fight corruption effectively, the LACC must treat all audit reports from the General Auditing Commission (GAC) equally, without cherry-picking, to ensure fairness and transparency. Skipping previous GAC audit reports and cherry-picking to target only officials of my administration undermines the fight against corruption, and the Liberian people must see such a move as a weaponization of the LACC to witch-hunt officials of my administration.”

“Like you, my fellow compatriots, I love our country and have always put our country’s interest above and beyond my personal interest. I have championed peace and stability, from my advocating for a ceasefire during the civil war to leading disarmament efforts to bring peace, serving as a peace ambassador, and, most recently, my conceding the election even before the pronouncement of final results, you can attest to my selfless and unwavering commitment to the peace, stability and the betterment of pour country. Sadly, it seems that the Boakai administration is interpreting our commitment to the peace and stability of our country as a weakness, and therefore keen on disturbing the peace by weaponizing key government functionaries to witch-hunt officials of the past government.”

“For the UP administration to exploit our legal system and risk fomenting chaos, it tells you to what extent some politicians are willing to go just to maintain power. This is exactly the path that the CDC sought not to tread when it maintained the stability of the country against all odds, while spearheading a peaceful transition of power to President Boakai in spite of a hard-fought and close election. These political detentions have, however, shown the lack of foresight and total disregard on the part of Boakai and his confidantes, caring less about the consequences of their actions, insofar as it serves their narrow political interests.” Former President Goerge Weah stated.
