EDITORIAL: We Welcome Prosecution of former Public Officials for Alleged corruption, But…

Recent arrests for prosecution of former officials of the Administration of former President George Manneh Weah, and the subsequent suspension of Central Bank Governor Aloysius Tarlue on charges of corruption are laudable.

Following the outcomes of audit reports that point breaches of financial laws and compliance failures demonstrate the government’s political will to act on investigative reports highlighting to corruption.

We also believe that the findings of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and General Auditing Commission audit and investigative reports long-standing challenges which had plagued public governance for nearly two centuries.

Yes! Public sector audits must improve governance and hold officials accountable for their stewardship of public resources with an unbiased objectivity.

Yet, commitment by the Joseph Nyuma Boakai-led Administration to upholding accountability and good governance across the public sector must be holistic and not selective.

Several reports of violations of procurement laws and financial regulations by the current Unity Party-led government must be investigated as the surest way of cementing the path for genuine transparency and accountability.
