Grand Gedeh District #1: Rep. Sokan Engages Citizens on $100K Legislative Project Fund

IPNEWS: Grand Gedeh County District #1 Jeremiah G. Sokan, has concluded a series of consultations aimed at discussing the allocation of a $100,000 Legislative Project Fund, as outlined in the 2024 national budget.
This initiative, mandated by the budget, requires lawmakers to engage directly with their constituents to identify priority projects that will address local developmental needs. The $100,000 allocated for each of Liberia’s seventy-three districts will be managed by the Liberia Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE), ensuring transparency and accountability in the implementation of the projects.
“I came here today to discuss the $100,000 allocated in the budget for each district. I want you to tell me how we should use this money,” Rep. Sokan stated during the meeting, emphasizing the importance of citizen participation in the decision-making process to promote open governance.
Since his election on April 23, 2024, following the death of CDC lawmaker Erol Madison Gwion, Rep. Sokan has focused on improving infrastructure and access to essential services. In a short span, he has cleared 15 kilometers of roads and initiated discussions with the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) and Lib-Energy, a private energy company, to provide electricity to the district’s fifty-six communities.
During the consultations, residents expressed gratitude for the opportunity to voice their concerns and suggest projects. Key issues highlighted included inadequate road infrastructure, poor drainage, insufficient healthcare services, and the need for better housing for people with disabilities.
Among the proposed projects were the paving of roads leading to the Grand Gedeh University College and the reactivation of the college’s nursing department.
Dixon Bagalo, General Secretary of the disabled community, praised Rep. Sokan’s inclusive approach. “This is the first time we have had the opportunity to tell our lawmaker what we need,” he remarked, emphasizing the significance of involving marginalized groups in the discussions.
Davidson Barlee, the County Development Officer, commended Rep. Sokan for fulfilling his campaign promises and engaging actively with the community. “Your efforts show true commitment to the people,” Barlee noted, highlighting the importance of continued collaboration between the government and citizens.
Rep. Sokan’s focus on community engagement and transparent governance has been well-received, with many residents optimistic about the impact of the Legislative Project Fund. By prioritizing local input, the fund aims to address critical developmental needs in Tchien District, ensuring that the projects implemented truly reflect the aspirations of the people.
As discussions continue, Rep. Sokan remains committed to fostering open dialogue and ensuring that the voices of his constituents guide the development process. The implementation of these projects is expected to begin shortly, with LACE overseeing the process to ensure effective management and accountability.
The $100,000 Legislative Project Fund represents a significant opportunity for the residents of Tchien District to improve their living conditions and strengthen their communities, marking a positive step towards sustainable development in Grand Gedeh County.
