Liberia: Where $20million Japanese Road Fund For Via Town-St. Paul Bridge?

— As Sen. Edwin Snowe Cries Out for Freeport to St. Paul Bridge Road Rehabilitation

IPNEWS: In November 2021, the Government of Liberia announced that it had secured the amount of $20million United States dollars from the Japanese Government for the construction of a two Lane Road from Gabriel Tucker bridge to St. Paul bridge.

According to former Ministry of Public Works Minister, Hon. Ruth Coker-Collins, the construction of the road will now be two lanes in each direction.

The Government and People of Japan have been very active in Liberia’s reconstruction and development agenda through their support to urban and rural infrastructural projects and food security.

The Government of Japan has financed many projects under Japan’s Non-Project Grant Aid. Projects under this grant include the construction of three (3) bridges in Grand Cape Mount County under the aegis of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, the reconstruction of ELWA-RIA corridor where alleyways in communities between ELWA junction and the Roberts International Airport would be opened by the Ministry of Public Works, and the implementation of the Japan-Liberia Paddy and Seed Rice Project managed by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Now, Bomi County Senator, has alarmed over the condition of the Freeport to St. Paul Bridge Road corridor. The Freeport to St. Paul’s bridge road corridor remains a major challenge to many citizens residing on the Bushrod Island thus making it difficult for them to get to central Monrovia on a daily basis.

In a communication to the plenary of the Liberian senate Tuesday, Senator Snowe expressed dismay over the worsening condition of the road.

According to him, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the government of Liberia and Western Cluster mandating the company to make available US$4.5 million for the pavement of the road from the Freeport of Monrovia to Tubmanburg.

The Bomi County Senator however noted that US$3 million has been provided by Western cluster to the government of Liberia purposely to rehabilitate the road from Freeport to St. Paul’s bridge.
