Liberia: ‘No Truth In Plans To Remove Me’, Speaker Fonati Koffa Clarifies

IPNEWS: In the wake of this week’s rumors about plans to remove incumbent House Speaker, House Speaker Cllr. Fonati Koffa has termed reports about his alleged removal by lawmakers as false and misleading, says he is in good standing with his colleagues and President Joseph Boakai.

Speaking to reporters on Capitol hill, Speaker Koffa emphatically stated that there is no truth to the allegations of his impending removal.

He emphasized that under his leadership, the 55th Legislature has consistently conducted regular sessions, with the majority of members reaffirming their support for him as Speaker.

While acknowledging challenges such as outstanding obligations related to vehicles and gasoline for lawmakers, Speaker Koffa underscored that these issues do not warrant any attempts at his removal.

He urged the public to remain calm, reiterating the lawmakers’ unwavering commitment to his leadership and their dedication to serving the welfare of the citizenry.

It may be recalled, rumors spread like wildfire early Monday morning about plans hatched by two of the ranking officials of the House to remove House Speaker Fonati Koffa.

The clarification by Speaker Koffa comes amidst this week’s rumors over the weekend of an immediate plot by Deputy Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, and District 1 Presentative Lofa County Representative Thomas Fallah, and Representative Melvin Cole of Bong County District 3, to remove the 56th Speaker of the National Legislature, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, Melvin Cole has rejected being apart of any plan for the removal of the speaker. 

Representative Marvin Cole of District #3, Bong County, has vehemently refuted allegations made by Staton Witherspoon, the former CEO of the Spoon FM Network, claiming that he Cole is part of a scheme to remove Representative J. Fonati Koffa as Speaker of the 55th House of Representatives.

In a fiery press conference held at his office, Representative Cole denounced Witherspoon’s accusations as “baseless and defamatory.”

“This is the only country where someone indicted of criminal activities presides over issues of accountability,” Cole stated. “You sit on public platforms and make baseless, malicious, and defamatory statements against someone like Marvin Cole, accusing me of being part of a system to remove Speaker Koffa.”

Representative Cole also criticized Witherspoon’s credibility, highlighting his history of making false accusations and spreading misinformation. He urged the public to scrutinize the validity of claims from someone with a questionable background.

Meanwhile, the Bong County lawmaker, who chairs the Committee on Rules, Order, and Administration of the 55th House of Representatives, reaffirmed his unwavering support for Speaker Koffa.

“I served as chairman of the bloc that supported Representative Koffa’s aspirations to contest as Speaker of the House,” Cole emphasized. “I am charged with the responsibility to protect and defend the speakership of Representative Koffa at any point in time.”

It can be recalled that during one of the editions of the Spoon Talk, one of the most listened to Political Platforms in the Country the lead Host and former CEO of Spoon Communication Network Staton Witherspoon mentioned that the Bong County Lawmaker is one of Key under miners to impeached Speaker Koffa.

Prior to this rebuttal by Representatives Melvin Cole, several sources hinted the authoritative INDEPENDENT PROBE that those two members of the House of Representatives accused were spearheading the plot to remove Speaker Koffa, after they were exposed following a meeting with Representative Musa Hassan Bility of Nimba County District 2 to join the clandestine plan. 

Other source further hinted that the inclusion of Representative Musa Hassan Bility is due to his eager and financial strength. Stressing that he is the only person who is financial potent to raise the funds in their rebellion quest. It is also believed that this rebellion against Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa is because he has the plan to help President Joseph Boakai succeed in his agenda which members of the CDC are oppose to.

Other revelation indicates that the two ringing leaders of the House of Representatives also met former President George Menneh Weah, leader of the CDC, alleged plan to remove Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa.
