— In Acts Bill for the Establishment of the Paynesville Community College

A Specialized Ad-hoc Committee constituted by the House of Representatives- HOR, to query Bea Mountain Mining Company- BMMC, on the implementation of a mandate from plenary, has concluded a daylong investigative hearing involving the committee and the company.

The Committee Chairman, Representative Michael Thomas, told the gathering Wednesday, June 12, 2024, that recently there was an alarming notification of protest at Bea Mountain Mining Company, which led to the setting-up of an immediate invention committee by plenary.

Representative Thomas said such a committee, based on facts finding, submitted a comprehensive report containing 38- counts which was endorsed by the plenary.

According to him, Montserrado County District 7 Representative, Emmanuel Dahn, sought the setting up of another committee to do a follow up with the company on the implementation of plenaryโ€™s mandate thus leading to the constitution of the Specialized Ad-hoc Committee.

He said the committee engagement with the company remains civil in ascertaining whether or not the implementation process is in full swing.

The Montserrado County District 4 Representative said, plenaryโ€™s mandate ranged from safety and welfare, insurance among others for employees of the company.

For his part, the Executive Director of Bea Mountain Mining Company- BMMC, Cem Aktay, committed to a full implementation of plenaryโ€™s mandate at all times.

Meanwhile, the gathering was attended by other committee members including Representatives Marie Johnson, Sumo K. Mulbah, Jacob C. Debee, and Eugine J.M. Kollie.

Others are Ernest M. Manseah, Mohammed Dosii, Kerkula M. Kamara, Taa Wongbe and Jerry K. Yogboh respectively.

In a related development, the House of Representatives has in acted a bill for the establishment of the Paynesville Community College.

The bill, which passed with overwhelming support, aims to provide affordable and accessible higher education opportunities to the residents of Paynesville and surrounding communities.

Plenary took the decision on Thursday( June 13, 2024) during its 9th day sitting in the second quarter.

The proposed act was sponsored by Hon. Michael Thomas representative District#4 Montserrado County.

Representative Thomas, who has been a staunch advocate for education reform, emphasized the importance of creating a community college that will cater to the needs of the local population. He believes that the establishment of the Paynesville Community College will not only increase access to higher education but also contribute to the overall development and progress of the region.

Meanwhile, the bill has been forwarded to the Liberian senate for concurrence.
