IPNEWS: The Nimba lawmaker cited the dedication of the rehabilitated St. John River Pedestrian Bridge and the Rail Bridge as shining examples, both critical lifelines connecting Bong and Nimba Counties.
The rehabilitation of the pedestrian bridge has been a major concern for many who use the St. John to Bong County route, and it required considerable time and resources for a team of engineers from AML to complete the project.
The recently held ceremony, graced by government officials and local leaders, showcased AML’s commitment to community development.
Rep Flomo encouraged the company to continue making the affected communities a central point of its operations so that they can feel part of the process.
Flomo emphasized the positive impact of AML’s investments, acknowledging the company’s meaningful contribution to Liberia’s progress.
Nimba County District 2 Representative, Nyan G. Flomo, also acknowledged AML’s intervention, emphasizing that the company’s investment in Liberia is meaningful to the country.
The lawmaker, however, called for more Liberian participation in ArcelorMittal Liberia. Representative Flomo stated that the government needs to consider Liberians in discussions about investments in the extractive sector, as that is the way they can be economically empowered to take ownership of their resources.
AML’s continuous support extends beyond bridge rehabilitation, with a notable focus on other sectors like education, community development, and healthcare infrastructure.
The ongoing construction of a hospital in Buchanan and the relocation of the GW Harley Hospital in Nimba County stand as a testament to AML’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of local communities.
Since the signing of its first MDA and subsequent commencement of operations, AML says it is dedicated to improving transportation infrastructure, exemplified by the fully-funded 40 million road project from Ganta to Yekepa. This pavement, the company believes, underscores its firm desire to facilitate efficient travel and promote Liberia’s overall development and road network enhancement drive.
AML’s Community Relations Supervisor, Edmund Saye Gbah, assured ongoing support and periodic interventions in alignment with the amended Mineral Development Agreement. He encourages residents to take ownership of the bridges and follow technical advice to ensure their longevity.
The pedestrian bridge has been inaccessible for years and was included in the project to rehabilitate the Duo Rail bridge, which suffered damage last November. Critical for the movement of people and goods between Bong and Nimba, the pedestrian bridge was reinforced with metal sheets, steel sleepers, and other more durable materials. The bridge can now support a maximum weight of 30 tons.
