“Liberians Are Yearning For Accountability” -Vice President Koung Stresses

By Jacqueline Dennis

IPNEWS: The Vice President and President of the 55th Senate, Mr. Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has said that Liberians are yearning for accountability and respect for the rule of law.

Vice President Koung made the statement Thursday, January 24, 2024, during the Senate’s regular session on Capitol Hill in Monrovia when he made his first appearance as the President of that August body. According to the Vice President, Liberians are demanding a drastic change in leadership paradigm of the Senate and the nation.

“Liberians are demanding the rebirth of the merit-based system, where competence and results are the primary focus of our public sector. They are anticipating that we will enact laws and implement policies, which will address their socio-economic needs. They are in a state of high expectation that we will strengthen our nation’s relationship with

International partners,” he noted.

Vice President Koung also informed senators that they must embrace positive changes without any degree of doubt. According to him, it will enhance the nation’s democratic credentials.

He admonished them that the elections are over, everyone should embrace a new mindset to eliminate the notion of a green or blue Liberia and give every Liberian the opportunity to contribute his or her quota to nation-building.

He reminded them to remain conscious of the urgent responsibility that comes with the assignment and they should give no room for excuses; emphasizing that every one of them is required to deliver on their promises.

The Vice President told the senators that as they strive to enhance the nation’s place amongst the comity of nations, they should never forget that the most important ingredient for nation-building is peace.

“I remain optimistic that we will continue to pursue the path of true reconciliation, and national unity, in the interest of the people of Liberia,” he assured.
