Civil Society Consortium Alerts Over JNB Outburst in Upcoming Speakership Election

IPNEWS: The Liberia Civic Society Consortium, a coalition of six Civil Society Organizations operating within the legal framework of Liberia, say it is deeply troubled by recent threatening statements attributed to President-Elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai. The Consortium stated that it feels compelled to bring attention to these alarming remarks and express its concern regarding the potential implications for democratic values and the political climate in Liberia.

In a release issued in Monrovia, the Civil Society Consortium notes that the President-Elect’s recent statements, which imply consequences based on support or non-support for Montserrado County District 11 Representative Richard Nagbe Koon’s quest for the speakership, have raised serious questions about the principles of fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity in the political landscape. The Consortium firmly believes in fostering an environment that upholds democratic ideals and ensures the well-being of all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations.

“The specific remarks suggesting that supporters of Richard Kun will be given preferential treatment in terms of job opportunities and the selection of commissioners in their districts are of particular concern. The Consortium emphasizes the importance of meritocracy and fair representation in public offices rather than creating a system that may encourage favoritism or discrimination based on political alliances. Furthermore, the Consortium expresses its reservations about the implied consequences for non-supporters of Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon, suggesting that they may not have access to the President for the next six years unless attending official functions at the Capitol. Such statements raise questions about the inclusivity and openness of the political leadership, which are crucial for a thriving democratic society.” The Civil Society Consortium noted.

The Liberia Civic Society Consortium calls on President-Elect Joseph Nyuma Boakai to reconsider and clarify these statements, ensuring that political discourse remains respectful, fair, and in adherence to democratic principles. The Consortium remains committed to promoting good governance, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights in Liberia.
