— Urges all Liberians to embrace peace and democratic values in Presidential election runoff
IPNEWS: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H. E. Moussa Faki Mahamat has been closely monitoring the political developments in Liberia following the conduct of 10 October 2023 general elections and ahead of the second round of presidential elections due tomorrow, 14 November 2023.
The Chairperson highly commends the people and Government of Liberia for the orderly and peaceful elections in the first round, which produced a generally accepted outcome, signifying the inherent capacity in AU Member States to strengthen democracy.
Towards the Presidential Runoff, the Chairperson urges the People of Liberia, once again, to display the highest the level of resilience, civic commitment via voter-turnout and voting peacefully, as well as confidence in the dividends of effective democratic governance through this second round of elections.
The Chairperson calls on all Liberian stakeholders, particularly political parties and leaders as well as the National Election Commission (NEC), to use the runoff election as an opportunity to enhance public trust in democratic practice during the critical remainder of the election process.
The Chairperson further encourages the stakeholders to put Liberia first in their participation in the election through complying with the legal framework and promoting peaceful engagement during and after polling day.
The Chairperson reaffirms the commitment of the African Union to continue to support the Republic of Liberia in its efforts to consolidate democracy, peace and development; and wishes the country a successful election process, which reflects the freely expressed will of the people.
