IPNEWS: Former ruling and now opposition Unity Party’s Standard bearer, Amb. Joseph Nyuma Boakai has warned the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) that rigging of the election will be devastating for Liberia.
Amb. Boakai, who is a former Vice President, challenged the CDC-led Administration headed by President George Manneh Weah, to tamper with his votes following the runoff election on Tuesday, November 14.
Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, November 12, at his residence in Paynesville, the Unity Party political leader said that if the CDC tampers with his votes and rigs the elections, the consequences on President George M. Weah will be devastating and unimagined.
“We understand President George M. Weah and his CDC’s feeble strategy to desperately hold on to power. We dare Mr. Weah to tamper with our votes and rig these elections. The consequences on him will be devastating and unimagined. We are committed to protecting Liberians’ votes and permitting the will of the majority to prevail,” Amb. Boakai stated.
According to him, with the runoff election scheduled for Tuesday, November 14, it is becoming obvious that the only strategy left with President Weah and his CDC is to engage in fear mongering and in some cases vain attempts to eliminate strong opponents.
The former Vice President accused his rival party of trying to deter Liberians from turning out in their mass to vote against what he describes as the ” failed CDC government”.
The UP standard bearer who sits at number one on the presidential runoff ballot paper further indicated that these troubling patterns of disrupting, harassing and viciously attacking party leaders in an effort to assassinate or silence them, days to the runoff elections, is indicative of a government that has realized it will be defeated for its miserable failures.
“The Unity Party takes these frequent attacks seriously; we recall that during the first round of the elections, UP partisans were violently attacked on multiple occasions. As a result of our commitment to the Farmington River Declaration, we exercised utmost restraint to avoid undermining our fledgling democracy,” he pointed out.
Finally, Amb. Boakai stated, “We have called on our partisans and sympathizers to remain calm as such unprovoked acts are intended to instill fear, divert our campaign, and frighten our people but WE WILL NOT SURRENDER! WE WILL MEET OUR FOES WITH VALOR UNPRETENDING.
