Liberia: Students Chase, Boo Finance Minister Tweah

By Seykajipo Amegashie

IPNEWS – As the race of the Liberian Presidency intensifies, the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Mr. Samuel D. Tweah, was seen on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 chased out of the premises of the Garretson W. Gibson Senior High School on Capitol Bye-pass in Monrovia. In live video footages that have been widely shared on social media by the Spoon Network, Minister Tweah is heard in the video committing to provide free food for the students for three days, a statement, which reportedly angered the students and they asked him to leave their campus.

The students can be heard loudly in the video saying that they do not want free food while their school lacks basic learning tools such as an equipped library and a science laboratory, pipe-borne water among other things. The students indicated that the Minister was in error to go on the campus to run campaign for the re-election of President George Weah. They were also heard chanting, “We do not want food; we do not want food; we want good education.”

It can be recalled that on September 7, 2023, Minister Tweah drove to the William V. S. Tubman High School in Monrovia and disrupted classes of 12th graders, who were scheduled to write their first marking period test. The kids were forced to join their campaign launch at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium. Some of the students, who resisted their political harassment, spoke to IPNEWS and decried Tweah’s undemocratic actions.

Most Liberians in the last few months into the campaign period witnessed the same Minister Tweah narrating on a campaign trail that Liberia under President Weah was supplying current to La Côte d’Ivore, a statement which was fiercely contested by Liberians.
