UP’s Joe Boakai Consoles Pres. Weah & CDC Following Deaths of “Girls for Weah” in Tragic Accident

As Pres. Weah Suspends Campaign Activities for Two Days

 

The opposition Unity Party has joined many other Liberians, who sympathized with the families of the “Girls for Weah” who lost their lives in a tragic car accident Tuesday, August 22, 2023, along the Monrovia-Gbarnga Highway.

Few hours after news broke of the tragedy, the Unity Party’s standard bearer, former Vice President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, was seen on the party’s Facebook page reading a statement of sympathy to President George Manneh Weah, the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the bereaved families of the three damsels.

The names of the girls are yet to be released. However, pictures of at least two of victims, have surfaced on the front pages of some local dailies.

When news started trickling in of the tragic accident, the Unity Party’s Campaign spokesman released this statement on Facebook:

“With great sadness our team has learned of a tragic accident sustained by members of the Girls of Weah on their way to participate in political activities of their political party.

On behalf of the entire Unity Party Campaign Team, the Rescue Mission and the Standard Bearer, I extend our deepest condolences to the families of the young women and all other persons who met their untimely demise. Our thoughts are also with the CDC for the tragic lost of their partisans. We pray that God grants their families solace and pray for speedy recovery of the survivors currently fighting for their lives.”

Meanwhile, George Manneh Weah has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the girls, who lost their lives in Bong County due to a terrible motor vehicle accident.

According to a release from the party, “The Girls for Weah team was on the campaign trail when three members met their untimely deaths. The President calls on all supporters of the CDC and Liberians, in general, to join him in praying for the families as they deal with this difficult loss and for the souls of the three faithfully depart to rest in perfect peace. The President also calls on all supporters to join him in praying for the speedy recovery of all team members who sustained injuries.”

“In the wake of this tragedy, the President is suspending his campaign for two days effective immediately, and he is returning to Monrovia tonight to mourn this terrible loss. He calls on all his supporters and Liberians to join him in mourning the lost lives at the Headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in Congo Town tomorrow at 2 pm,” CDC said in its release.

According to CDC sources, the Girls of Weah auxiliary was formed recently to support the second term reelection bid of the Weah.

The group is reportedly heavily involved with trying to mobilize and recruit their fellow young women and other youth so that President Weah can win a one-round victory in the Presidential and Legislative Elections on October 10, 2023.
