AML Alarms Over Industrial Action; Prioritizes Safety of Staff, Contractors & Community

IPNEWS: Global steel giant ArcelorMittal has expressed alarm over industrial actions carried out by some of its workers in Yekepa, Nimba County, and Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, noting that it is monitoring the situation closely.

According to a May 10, 2023 press statement issued by the company, in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 10, 2023, some employees of ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) in Yekepa and Buchanan engaged in industrial action, stalling the company’s production and operations in both locations, posing a risk to our employees.

“As we monitor the situation closely, the safety and security of our employees, the community, and our contractors will continue to be of top priority.

“We are in contact with the Ministry of Labor and representatives of the workers’ union. The Ministry has scheduled a meeting with all parties to which we hope to find a resolution for all parties involved,” AML stated categorically.

It may be recalled similar action occurred in 2017, when operations at the concession site of steel giant ArcelorMittal came to a standstill, owing to a go-slow action by workers, who were demanding better wages, benefits, and improved living conditions.
