Suspected Ivorian Armed Robber Arrested In Ganta

–As Police Places Ban on Motorbikes Operations from 11pm to 5am

A suspected notorious armed robber, 38-year-old Abu Weamie, known for reportedly terrorizing residents of Nimba County, has been arrested by the Nimba County Detachment of the Liberia National Police.

The Ivorian, who was declared wanted by the police, was arrested at his girlfriend’s house in Ganta after an intelligence, police has said.

Weamie reportedly escaped death during a recent armed robbery incident that led to the death of Victor Sabu Yenglee, a former Nimba County footballer, who was mobbed to death last week by angry crowd in Ganta after reportedly being part of a gang who had gone to raid the home of Harney Kerkulah, a resident of Ganta.

Ban Placed on Motorcycles, Tinted Vehicles at Night

Following the increase in incidences of crime in the county, police in the county have placed a ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles after 11 p.m.

The police are also demanding that users of vehicles with tinted windshields must get permits. The policeΒ statement on Monday said the measure was part of efforts to rid the county of criminals.

β€œAccordingly, all security agencies are hereby enjoined to impound all such motorcycles and vehicles while the owners or riders would be prosecuted,” the police said.

β€œThe Nimba County Detachment of the Liberia National Police encourages all vehicle and motorcycle owners to register their vehicles/motorcycles as defaulters would be made to face the full wrath of the law accordingly.Β

β€œThe determination of the police is to ensure the protection of lives and property of the good people of Nimba County remains a top priority.”

A similar measure was first put in place by the police in November 2020, when armed robbery was on the rise in the county.

Although the ban was not officially lifted, and the measures were only enforced briefly, things soon returned to normal even though the security situation continued to worsen.
