Sunday Morning Tragedy -Two Ladies Found Dead Near Rally Time Market

Bodies of Mercy and Chris an hour after they were killed

Identified by residents and family members as Mercy and Chris, their bodies were found in a pool of blood on early Sunday morning, February 19, 2023, in the vicinity of the Rally Time Market and BTC Military Barracks on UN Drive in Monrovia.

Eyewitnesses said the ladies were knocked down and killed instantly by a speeding vehicle while they were in a fight over cigarettes and drugs in the middle of the street which was dark at the time due to power outage.

An officer of the Liberia National Police, who arrived on the scene of the fatal accident an hour later, told this Newspaper that the third victim, a male (unidentified), was severely wounded in the tragic accident, but died minutes later after he was sped off to the JFK Hospital in Sinkor for treatment.

The officer also said the driver of the vehicle, a Lebanese man, turned himself in to the police immediately following the incident. He provided no further details.

The two female causalities, Mercy and Chris, according to friends and families, were residents of the slum community of Soniwein in Monrovia and were also part of a group of underprivileged Liberians being referred to as Zogos.

Other sources said the pair lived on drugs and prostitution.

The origin of the name zogo and who must have coined it, is not known, but what we do know is individuals in this category are young and old Liberians, many whom are engaged in unwholesome acts, such as drug use and abuse, hijacking, burglary and the snatching of phones and other valuables in major street corners and communities.

Cemeteries in and outside of the Capital, Monrovia, are home to many of this category of Liberians.

Just a week ago, a fierce fight broke out between a group of Zogos and commercial cyclists at a popular cemetery in the Congo Town suburb of Monrovia.

Eyewitnesses said the fight broke out when a group of commercial motorcyclists had gone to retrieve their motorbikes that were allegedly stolen by the Zogos and kept at the cemetery. Writes David N. Targbe reports
