VP Taylor against Voters Trucking ahead of Voter Registration

Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Jewel Howard Taylor has warned against voters trucking by those she referred to as “failed politicians” in various districts across the country ahead of the voter registration.

Voter trucking has become a widespread phenomenon within Liberian body politics since post-war Liberia and is eroding very severely the essence of representative democracy.

It runs contrary to the New Elections Law Chapter 10.2, which states, “the following acts shall constitute malfeasance, punishable, and Influencing or attempting to influence the result of any election to include the trucking of voters.”

Mrs. Howard Taylor said voter trucking upsets people who want a proper representation of their constituents. “The issue of voter trucking is a crime under the New Elections Law. Therefore, it should be handled with seriousness,” Howard-Taylor said ahead of the March 20 Biometric Voter Registration.

“The security apparatus must not just watch those buses travel across the country but must act swiftly to curtail the situation during the election,” she said.

“If you truck people is a crime, but there will be buses, and trucks of people moving from place to place but no one said anything.”

“And what it does is that group loses a chance to elect someone to represent them properly where they lived and then they upset the election of the people who want another leader.”

She further added, “I think it should be seriously handled. I am happy that we will be able to have new registration, so people can be able to stay where they are, but there will still be people trucking all around the place and you will know security forces will see the truck, and they will see the buses. If you live in Bomi why there is a truck full of people coming to Bomi?” she asked.

“Others have to take responsibility for the system so people know that the things that are wronged can be handled,” she said.
