PRESIDENT, BELIEVE it or not, this year’s State of the Nation Address or SONA, may likely pave or block the way to your re-election, mainly coming at a time a vast majority of the population is complaining of hash economic conditions, while a few elites live a lifestyle of opulence.
YES, YOU MUST have made some gains in infrastructure development, including roads, hospitals, and academic institutions, the question many jobless and indigent citizens are asking is; where are the jobs that you promised Mr. President?
PRESIDENT, UNTIL you and your government address the bread-and-butter issues that confront majority of the citizenry, your chances to win a second term are slim.
TO MAKE MATTER worst for you, just few days to your 2023 State of the Nation Address, one of your major allies, Senator Prince Johnson of vote rich Nimba County, told Liberians and the whole World on the Voice of America, VOA, that you and your government’s failure to attract foreign investors to the Country has further exacerbated the suffering of the ordinary citizens.
EVEN THE RECENT NAYMOTE Partner for Democracy report card on your performance did not only say you under per-performed, but also said you reneged on many of the promises that you made to the Liberian people.
SO YOU SEE Mr. President, this is why we think this year’s State of the Nation Address, is a major determining factor for your possible re-election because it is coming at a time that the Liberian people will again be deciding in October this year on whether to retain you as their president or retire you.
AS IT HAS always been, it is expected that all Liberians, home and abroad, whether for you, or against you, are eager to hear what you are about to say this time around.
HOWEVER, MR. PRESIDENT, keep in mind that no matter what may be contained in your address, your critics, mainly your political opponents, will also be all ears to look for all the pitfalls in your speech to use them against you with the aim to dampen your chances for your re-election in October.
JUST LET YOU know Mr. President, as we were penning down this editorial, the questions we were hearing in the streets were: What will he say this time around? Throw jabs at his political opponents? Or say the same recitation?
WHATEVER THE CASE is, do not be deterred Mr. President, as the delivery of the State of the Nation Address is your constitutional duty and so no matter what the mindset of the people, mainly your detractors is, deliver it with the best of your ability, keeping in mind that as we approach the presidential and legislative elections in October, this year’s SONA is key to your re-election.
WE SAY SO because as your six-year term is nearing an end, it is the last chance to present the legislative program and as well tell the Liberian people what the state of the economy is, including expenditure and income and what lies ahead of them as you end your first six years of office.
THE BALL IS now in your coat, Mr. President, to either persuade or dissuade the citizenry to retain you as their president or retire you.
THIS IS WHY we say this year’s SONA is very unique and is a key to your re-election.
