Minister Sirleaf Cracks on President Weah’s Christmas Package

IPNEWS-Grand Kru: The Minister of Internal Affairs (MIA) has clarified about the much-publicized President George Weah Christmas package presented to the Children of Grand Kru through the County Superintendent Doris Ylatun.

According to the Internal Affairs Minister Varney Sirleaf, the three hundred thousand Liberian dollars (LS$300,000) and the one hundred (100) bags of 25kg rice given by the Liberian leader to the Superintendent of Grand Kru County was intended to organize a children Christmas party, as a mean of putting smile on the faces of thousands of children in Barclayville City and other nearby communities.

The Minister’s clarity came following the alleged embezzlement of One hundred and ten thousand Liberian dollars (LS$110,000), including one hundred (100) bags of rice by Superintendent Doris Ylatun’s administration.

Earlier, responding to the widespread allegations on a local radio station within the county, Superintendent Ylatun struggling to speak to the situation said, portion of the money, in the tune of (L$110,000) was directed to support the football team, something that sparked public mix-views in Grand Kru County.

“One hundred begs of rice and three hundred thousand Liberian dollars were given by the President so we can have children part in the county, it doesn’t only mean that the party was to only be held in Barclayville, but will be in segments since the children cannot be brought to one place for season celebration’s, adding that was the mandate given to the Superintendent by the President to work in collaboration with the City Mayor of Barclayville,” Minister Sirleaf disclosed.

The MIA boss asserted that county football teams were not part of the budget, but have issued a mandate for the Superintendent to pay back the money they took from the children’s budget.

He said the money received by the local authorities of the county was not intended to support football teams across the county.

Minister Varney Sirleaf speaking to Ahteenah Radio in Barclayville further called on citizens of the county to reconsider their decision to stage any protest, as his office will ensure the superintendent pays back the money and they can jointly plan another engagement with said fund.

Meanwhile, Grand Kru County chapter of the Liberia’s National Children Parliament Representative, Alphonso T. Toe expressed disappointment in the leadership of the county for not using the money for it purpose intended as instructed by President George Weah.

Children Activist Toe is demanding the Superintendent of the county to account for the gesture provided by President Weah, adding that the gesture provided by the Liberian leader was in a positive direction aimed at taking children off the streets during the festive season in the county.
