-To Watch Son, Timothy Weah, Plays for USA in FIFA World Cup
At the invitation of Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the President of Liberia, George Weah, arrived in Doha, Qatar last week to attend the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 which kicked off at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday. November 18, 2022.
The Liberian president and the accompanying delegation were welcomed upon arrival at Hamad International Airport by the Minister of Sports and Youth, Salah bin Ghanim Al Ali, and Charges D’affaires of the Embassy of Liberia to Qatar Ali Sylla.
While in Doha, President George Weah, will watch his son Timothy Weah, play for the United States of America Men’s team, against Wales.
President Weah as a footballer became FIFA World Player of the Year in 1995 but was unfortunate to play in the FIFA World Cup finals as Liberia missed out all of the time during his career. Above is Timothy Weah, who plays for the USA having been born in that country.
Timothy Weah was born in the United States to the union of Mr. George Weah (now President of Liberia) and Mrs. Clar Duncan Weah (now First Lady of Liberia), which automatically qualifies him as a United States citizen.
Like his father, Timothy pursued football as a profession and has been blessed enough to reach a professional level, having gone through the football academy of French giants Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and later promoted to play for the first team. But when he could not get enough playing times, he was loaned to Scottish club, Celtics, where he helped them win the Scottish League, during the time of former Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers as their manager at Celtics.
Following his loan spell at Celtics, Timothy returned to PSG but this time around the French club decided to sell him to another French club, Lille where the young Weah played a key role for Lille to win the French title.
Flashback: Tim Weah in action for the USA
Many Liberians were of the belief that Timothy Weah would have chosen to play for his father country, Liberia on the international level, but disappointedly for them, Timothy chose to play for his country of birth, despite having a Liberian father and a Jamaican-born United States citizen, Clar Duncan Weah.
Prior to the Liberia leader’s arrival in Doha, President Weah on Wednesday, 9 November 2022, in continuation of his chain of international duties, departed the Arab Republic of Egypt and arrived in Paris, France to attend the 5th Edition of the Paris Peace Forum.
President George Weah while in Paris, attended the renowned Paris Peace Forum which serves as a platform upon which state and non-state actors engage in transnational cooperation for collective action.
The Paris Peace Forum, with the far-reaching and combined effects of crises across the world on people and global cooperation, this year’s forum focuses on “Riding out the Multi-Crisis” with special emphasis on managing the fallout of the multi-crisis on populations, cooperating through conflicts, rethinking globalization in a polarized world and catalyzing climate and environmental solutions as well as ensuring a safer and ethical digital world and fostering more inclusive and just societies.
On the margins of the forum, President Weah held a bilateral meeting with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.
