-Maxson A. Kpakio Warns NEC
IPNEWS: The leader of one of Liberia’s leading civil society organizations has warned the National Elections Commission (NEC), against rushing the Country into what he calls a serious political misunderstanding.
Justice Forum Liberia Executive Director, Maxson A. Kpakio, gave the warning in reaction to a pronouncement by NEC’s Chairperson, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, regarding the preparedness for the Commission to use a Biometric System of voting come 2023 national elections.
Mr. Kpakio said while the electronic voting system helps organize elections quickly, conveniently, and securely, it will be prudent for such a system to be tested mainly in Liberia where the internet is not strong and stable.
“I am deeply concerned about this biometric voting system that NEC has talked about especially as we have poor internet support and coverage across the country”, Kpakio noted while at the same time reminding the NEC of its social responsibility to the people of Liberia when it comes to elections.
Mr. Kpakio said he thinks the National Elections Commission should for a lengthy period conduct an awareness exercise that must be followed by a testing of the biometric system during bi-elections or elections such as the ones conducted by the Press Union of Liberia.
