IPNEWS: Barely a few hours after President George Weah announced the suspension of three of his officials sanctioned by the United States government for corruption, Montserrado County Senator Darius Dillon described the move by the President as ‘political’ and only intended to take away the negative effect the sanction is having on the President County tour in Montserrado.
Senator Dillon Speaking at the news conference in Monrovia on Tuesday, August 1,6, 2022, said President Weah needs to do more by immediately dismissing the officials or demanding their resignation from his government.
Senator Dillon also wants the Ministry of Justice to collaborate with Foreign Affairs Ministry in other to rest for support from the United States government to commence an investigation and subsequent prosecution of the three men and any other government officials previously sanctioned under his regime.
“As Senator, I am asking the President to immediately demand the resignation or dismiss these three officials and that the Minister of Justice and Ministry of Foreign Affairs request support with the United States government in other to commence an investigation and subsequent prosecution of the three men and any other government officials previously sanctioned under his regime,” Senator Dillon emphasized.
“I am today asking the President of Liberia to demand the immediate resignation of these sanctioned individuals because a mere pronouncement of suspension is not enough. The culture of impunity must end and must begin to end now.”
He said the corrupt practices in which these men were engaged in have both national and international negative impacts on the country. The sanctions ensured that Liberia’s international partner will no longer deal with them. “If President Weah fails to fire them, it will send a message that he agrees with their corrupt practices and the harm they are causing the Liberia people.”
“At this point, every Liberian must be angry about this. If the President means well for our country and people, he should be angry as well. How can the President continue to keep these officials in office?”
The Montserrado County Senator said a single official like Bill Twehway has the guts to steal US$1.5 million when in fact said fund could be used for the economic, infrastructure and social development of the country.
He alleges that President Weah, Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, NPA Boss Bill Twehway and Minister of State Nathaniel McGill are the only officials that know how an entity like Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) is operating at the Free Port of Monrovia.
“At the Free Port of Monrovia, it is only these four people that know what Cargo Tracking Note (CTN) is doing in Liberia’s Port. And sadly, this Legislature of which I am part have reneged to investigate and know the value the CTN is adding to the Port for which it is imposing additional economic burden on our people doing business at the Free Port of Monrovia.”
The Montserrado County Senator expressed thanks to US government for the step taken in helping Liberia to bring to end violators of public trust. He encourages the United States government to keep engage and continues this measure until corruption can be eradicated in the country. Writes P. Nas Mulbah
