“WE’LL TEACH HIM A LESSON IN 2023” -Waterside Marketers

IPNEWS: Apparently angry over news that members of the National Legislature have each received thirty United States Dollars (US$30,000.00) amidst the current economic hardship across the country, some Liberians selling in the commercial district of Waterside, have said they will teach President George Weah a lesson in 2023.

Liberians, will in 2023, go to elections in which President Weah will be seeking a second term of office. The angry street sellers said the President and his government have failed to address the main challenges confronting the ordinary people while he and his few officials are draining the national coffers and amassing wealth at the detriment of the wider society.

The Waterside Street vendors were particularly annoyed by what they said the Government’s failure to repair burst sewage lines that are leaking human wastes into the streets where they sell their markets. “The stench from the human feces is making us sick because we don’t only sell here, but we also eat and do everything here,” they told this Paper.

Water Street is one of the filthiest and busiest streets in the Waterside commercial district. It is awash in filth and dotted with manholes that are oozing out feces, especially during the rainy season.

The angry street vendors said they have repeatedly engaged the management of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, LWSC, on the situation, but have not yielded the desire results.

They also attributed the problem to what they say is the growing number of commercial toilets near the commercial district. “All these commercial toilets are all connected to the LWSC sewage lines,” the vendors said.

The angry vendors also blamed Montserrado County District ‘7’ Representative, Solomon George, who they accused of doing little to seek their interest. Representative George has denied the claims and told a team of Independent Probe reporters that if he were President George Weah, the managing director of the LWSC would have been dismissed by now. The Lawmaker said the LWASC management team is dismally performing and is incompetent to manage the government agency.

Meanwhile, the Waterside marketers said although the Liberian Independence Day or ‘26’ celebrations are nearing, there are no buyers. “This is one of the worst ‘26’ seasons due to the extreme economic hardship facing the citizens,’ the markers noted. But others have expressed optimism and said Liberians are people, who like to wait for the last minute before they start to shop for the holiday. Liberia will on July 26, 2022, observe its 175th Independence Day anniversary. Writes Edwin Philips with additional reporting by Editor David N. Targbe
