Artificial Turf Laid at SKD Playing Pitch – Liberia to Resume Playing Home

IPNEWS-Monrovia: The authoritative Independent Probe (IPNEWS) has gathered that if everything goes well, Liberia will play South Africa at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex come September this year in continuation of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

The artificial turf has completely be laid on the once unpleasant playing pitch of the SDK Sports Complex few months ago, but through the hard work of authorities of the Ministry of Youth and Sports with support from the Government of Liberia a brand new artificial turf has been laid on the playing pitch of the SKD, thus making the stadium worthy for international matches once again.

On Wednesday, June 23, 2022, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Nathaniel McGill praised the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the level of work they are doing to bring international football back to the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex.

Touring the facilities of SKD Sports Complex on Wednesday, June 23, 2022, Minister McGill thanked Minister D. Zeogar Wilson and his Team for transforming the SKD Sports Complex to international standards. Noting that the stadium which was built in the late 1970s has been transformed into a brand new one.

Minister McGill said the playing pitch now has first-class turf, when manage well it will last for 15 years before anything can be changed.

At the same time, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Nathaniel McGill disclosed that the government is anticipating the decentralization of sporting facilities in all counties saying it is the President’s wish because people from Grand Kru don’t have to travel to Monrovia to see or use this kind facility.

He noted that this government is focused on development that is why they are connecting the country by building roads because we need roads to carry development to other parts of Liberia.

It can be recalled in May 2021, the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex which is Liberia’s best stadium was banned by FIFA for not reaching international standards.  With funding from the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the renovation is about 90%.
