United States Ambassador to Liberia to Formally Launch USAID-Funded Elections and Democracy Activity in Liberia

United States Ambassador to Liberia, His Excellency Mr. Michael McCarthy, is expected to officially launch the Elections and Democracy Activity (EDA) in Liberia.

EDA is five-year program funded by the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID). This event will take place on Friday, October 15, 2021.

EDA will collaborate with the Government of Liberia (GOL), the National Elections Commission (NEC), and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to cultivate accountable elected representatives who govern in the interest of their constituents. Democracy International leads the implementation of EDA through three interconnected objectives: (1) increasing leadership of marginalized groups in political processes, with a focus on supporting women and youth; (2)
improving civic knowledge and sense of civic duty by supporting the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the roll-out of civic education in grades 1 to 6 as well as civic education targeting adults and the voting-age population; and (3) advancing self-reliance of the NEC and domestic CSOs to independently manage and observe all stages of the electoral cycle. EDA’s interventions will be implemented throughout Liberia in collaboration with national and local partners.

According to Xav Flowers, EDA Chief of Party, “Through the generous support of USAID, EDA is an inspiring undertaking designed to foster a cadre of inclusive and diverse leaders who are responsive to the needs of everyday Liberians.”

In addition to the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, other esteemed invitees to the EDA Launch include: USAID Mission Director, government officials from the MoE and the NEC, members of the National Legislature, leaders from CSOs, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and international and local partners, among others.

Democracy International is a US–based organization working globally to support active citizens, responsive governments, engaged civil society and political organizations to achieve a more peaceful democratic world. By developing and using new knowledge, tools, and approaches, Democracy International works to transform lives of people and communities across four key practice areas: Politics, Governance, Peace & Resilience, and Learning.
