EU calls for Power sharing in Chad after Death of Pres. Idriss Déby

IPNEWS: The European Parliament in a resolution adopted on Thursday, May 20, 2021, denounced the seizure of power by the military after the death of President Idriss Déby and calls for a return to constitutional order.

The European Parliament therefore calls on the Transitional Military Council to ” create and guarantee the conditions for an inclusive national dialogue between the government and civil society actors and to guarantee a peaceful, civilian-led and urgent transition towards democratic elections , free and fair, as soon as possible, which would lead to a democratically elected president and an open government ” .

The position of the European Parliament is very different from that of the African Union, which has neither condemned the seizure of power by the military, nor called for a civilian transition.

For the German researcher, Helga Dickow, this resolution is a good thing but it is, she says, insufficient.

For lawyer Max Loalngar, spokesperson for the Wakit-Tama citizen movement, the resolution taken by MEPs is a lesson in democracy given to the African Union, but also to France, who support the Transitional Military Council. “For once, we have an institution which is committed to the defense of its values but which has also taken the good measure of the punishment of the Chadian people” , affirms Max Loalgnar. “We are in a hurry to see sanctions fall in order to give force to this resolution. It is a nice slap given to the African Union and also to France.”

“In an exceptional situation, an exceptional measure”
This opinion is shared in the streets of N’Djamena, according to testimonies collected by the DW correspondent on the spot.

For this musician for example, “the Chadian people have been demonstrating in the streets for more than a month. There have been injuries and deaths. It is just to demand a return to constitutional order. And today ‘ hui, the European Parliament has just listened to the Chadian people. ”

A little further on, a student believes that “this decision by the European Union is a great lesson in democracy. But the EU should not stop at a simple declaration. We need sanctions against these soldiers.”

For Abderamane Koulamallah, the Minister of Communication and spokesperson for the transitional military government, “the European Parliament is in its role. All the States of the world condemn the seizure of power by arms. But in Chad it is a situation exceptional, there is an institutional vacuum due to the refusal of the President of the National Assembly to assume his responsibilities. In exceptional circumstances, exceptional measure. ”
