Nimba Lawmaker Wants NCCC Upgraded to University

IPNEWS-MONROVIA:The chairman of the House’s Education and Public Administration Committee, Rep. Johnson Gwaikolo, has appealed to his colleagues to repeal the status of the Nimba County Community College (NCCC) from a community college to a full four-year degree-granting institution.

Despite the county’s rapid, and infrastructure development, Nimba, the second-most populous county in Liberia with a population of 462,026 (2008 Census Report), has no four-year degree university.

IPPNEWS-MONROVIA: Rep. Gwaikolo, who represents the people of Nimba County District #9 communicated with plenary proposing “An Act to Repeal the 2010 Act Creating the Nimba County Community College and to establish in lieu thereof a Nimba University College and Grant it a Charter.” The bill, which is sponsor by Rep. Gwaikolo, is being backed by Nimba County’s remaining lawmakers, now affixed their signatures as co-sponsors.

“Mr. Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Distinguished colleagues having applied to the National Commission on Higher Education for the elevation of the NCCC to a four-year degree-granting institution, the NCCC administration along with other stakeholders worked assiduously with the National Commission on Higher Education to determine the preparedness of the college to be elevated as requested,” Rep. Gwaikolo said.

He added, “upon completion of its assessment of infrastructural facilities, academic programs, financial sustainability plan, and staff development plan, the NICHE has granted approval for the elevation of NCCC to offer Bachelor’s degrees Programs.”

Meanwhile, the House voted for the communication and bill to be sent to the Joint Committee on Educator and Public Administration; Ways, Means, Finance and Development Planning and Judiciary to report within two weeks. The motion was proffered by Rep. Moima Briggs-Mensah of Bong County District #6. (Courtesy of Daily Observer)
