‘Oppressive Tendency’, Over Senate dragnet to Investigate Senator Dillon

IPNews-Monrovia: Article 42 of the Liberia constitution states: “No member of the Senate or House of Representatives shall be arrested, detained, prosecuted or tried as a result of opinions expressed or votes cast in the exercise of the functions of his office. Members shall be privileged from arrest while attending, going to or returning from sessions of the Legislature, except for treason, felony or breach of the peace. All official acts done or performed and all statement made in the Chambers of the Legislature shall be privileged, and no Legislator shall be held accountable or punished therefor.”

In complete defiant to this constitutional provision enshrined in the Liberian constitution, IPNews has unearth a communication to members of the Liberia Senate to investigate Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon role played in January 2, 2020, protest led by the Council of Patriot-CoP.

The communication which is from Sinoe County Senator, Cllr. Augustine S. Chea, is requesting the plenary of the Liberian Senate to investigate the role of Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon for his involvement in the January 6, 2020 protest.

A portion of the communication accused Senator Dillon of jointly staging the January 6, 2020, “against the President and the government of Liberia.”

The communication, written by Sinoe County Senator, Cllr. Augustine S. Chea, also appeared on the agenda of the 4th day sitting, 3rd Session of the 54th Senate. However, the communication was not read in plenary, due to the lack of curium according to legislative sources.

Reacting to the appearance of the communication as an item on the agenda, Senator Dillon stated that he wonders why the Sinoe county Senator could not refresh his elementary civics textbooks which clearly state the fundamental rights of the freedom of association, “once you are doing so within the confines of law.”

“Let the Senate plenary tell me that I have no such rights. Let me make it clear here: if we the Senators in majority refuse to use our responsibility and duty here to the people, and our people decide to come out and express themselves, I will join them, even today,” the senator stated.

The Liberty party strong man maintained that if the Senators in the majority were performing their duties, representing their people’s interest in keeping with their aspirations, there will be no protest in the country.

“There is protest almost everywhere, some in silence; right in this place there is a protest, the Vice President is protesting; I am waiting for [Senator] Augustine Chea. I want him to understand that I am a Senator for the first county in the Republic of Liberia and the Senator with the biggest mandate in this country. If he does not want my wrath, the wrath of the people of Montserrado and the people of Liberia, including most of them from Sinoe that support me, and if he thinks I am lying, let him ask Representative Munah Pelham.” Senator Dillon laugh out.

There has been mixed view about the performance of some Legislators upon taking their respective seats at the capitol building.

Liberians from cross spectrum spoken to attributes much of the national problems, including the poor state of the country’s economy to the under-representation of most of the lawmakers on capitol hill.

Some stated that most of the lawmakers were solely concern with fabulous salaries and gasoline slip rather than adequately representing their various constituencies.

The cross spectrum of citizens called on their fellow countrymen to carefully validate aspirates as the October 2020 mid-term Senatorial elections draws closer.
