Leadership crisis looms in Unity Party, as EC suspends Party Chairman Wilmot Paye

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the former governing Unity Party has voted to suspend Wilmot J. M. Paye as National Chairman of the party with immediate effect.

Chairman Paye’s suspension is as a result of a unilateral decision taken to hold a press conference in which he (Chairman Paye) called on UP partisans in the name of the party to stay away from the peaceful assembly organized by group of Liberians under the banner of the Council of Patriots.

It may be recalled. Chairman Wilmot Paye, on January 5,2020, the eve of the mic publicised protest by the Council of Patriots-CoP, issued a press release calling on partisans of Unity Party to stay away from the Monday,January 6,2020, protest on grounds that the protest was not meaningful following a previous one which was cancelled for December 31,2019, following and Intense negotiations by the international community led by the United States and other diplomatic missions accredited near Monrovia.

The release by Paye was swiftly responded to by assistant secretary general for press and public affairs, Mo Ali, teeming the paye’s comments as personal and not with the knowledge of the national executive committee.

Mo Ali therefore rubbished Wilmot Paye press statement and call on partisans of the former governing party to turnout in their mass as the party would support each all process which are required under the democratic space.

The NEC considers Wilmot’s pronouncement in a press conference held on January 5, 2020 as gross insubordination to both the Executive Committee and the entire party.

The NEC meanwhile has constituted a Special Committee to investigate the motive for Chairman Paye’s unilateral decision on such critical national issue. The Chairman will remain suspended until the committee can complete its investigation and report findings within a period of two weeks for further actions. Below are members of the Committee:

1. Mrs. Dabah Mabande Varpilah – Chairperson
2. Cllr. Peter Bonah Jallah – Legal Advisor
3. Mrs. Cornelia Kruah-Togba – Secretary
4. Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon – Member
5. Loseni Sayon – Member

In another development, the NEC voted to lift the suspension of Partisan Whroway Bryant. The lifting of the suspension means that Whroway will immediately resume his position as Vice Chairman of the National Youth Congress of the Unity Party.
