IPNews-Monrovia: Members of the House of Representatives has summoned authorities of the Central Bank of Liberia to appear today, Monday in an Executive session to explain reasons for the shortages of Liberian dollar banknotes at various commercial banks across Liberia.
According to the House of Representative, CBL authorities will also provide details regarding the actual amount and what huge cash of United States dollars that was brought into the country.
It may be recalled, the government of Liberia on December 3rd announced that had brought into the country, huge cash of United States dollars to be distributed among commercial banks that transacted with their various international money transfer system.
The motioned for the appearance of the CBL authorities also states that lawmakers should refrain from discussing the matter on the air waves until the authorities of the Central Bank of Liberia could provide the necessary information regarding the new Liberian banknotes.
Lawmakers on capitol Hill took the decision last Friday December 13, 2019, during the 8 day sitting of the extraordinary session of the 54 National Legislature following a communication from Bong County District #6 representative Moima Bridggs Mensah.
In her communication to her colleagues, representative Mensah noted that there are lots of speculations and questions circulating regarding an unknown amount of currency that was recently brought into the Liberian economy.
The Bong County lawmaker however noted that the October 18, 1999 Act of legislature which established the CBL is to ensure a sound banking and financial system throughout Liberia.
Following plenary deliberation, a motion from Montserrado County district #8 Representative Acarous Gray was proffered that authorities of the CBL be ordered to appear in executive session on today Monday.
Meanwhile, a member of the Liberian legislature Margibi County District # 2 Representative, Alva Jones has expressed dissatisfaction over the current wave of economic crisis in the country.
Addressing legislative reporters over the weekend at his Capitol Building office, Representative Jones said there is a need that the issue of printing additional bank notes be properly review by relevant state authorities so as to avoid mistake made by previous administration.
Representative Jones told a news conference that no authorization from members of the national legislature in keeping with Article 34 b2 of the Liberian constitution to the Central Bank of Liberia to collect money from the county reserved.
Representative Jones is at the time calling on authorities of the CBL to provide clarity as to where the new money in circulation is being taken from in order to get raid of the speculations from the public by invoking article 15 of the liberian constitution.
The Margibi County District 2 lawmaker has at the same backed a communication from one of his colleague Bomi county district 6 to cite authorities of the Central Bank of Liberia to explain the inflow of money in the country.
The Margibi County District 2 lawmaker Alva spoke during the weekend at a news conference on capitol hills to legislative reporters.
